Adalbert Gyrowetz (Vojtech Jírovec) was born in Bohemia and travelled extensively throughout Europe before finally settling in Vienna. Although Gyrowetz was seven years older than Beethoven, he outlived him by an astonishing 23 years. Early in his composing career Gyrowetz concentrated on instrumental music, which remained popular even after his 1804 appointment to the Viennese Court Theater (the young Chopin made his debut in Poland in 1818 playing a Gyrowetz concerto). After 1804, however, Gyrowetz devoted himself almost exclusively to theatrical music. The Op. 44 quartets were among the last of his instrumental works to appear before he turned to the theater.
